Parity was aplenty on the 2024 ATP doubles tour with a wide mix of both new and existing teams who captured the lion’s share of the biggest titles. For the 5th year in a row, four different teams won each of the grand slams.
- Australian Open: Matt Ebden & Rohan Bopanna
- Roland Garros: Marcelo Arevalo & Mate Pavic
- Wimbledon: Harri Heliovaara & Henry Patten
- U.S. Open: Max Purcell & Jordan Thompson
This parity-focused theme represents the current ATP doubles landscape in the post-Bryan Brothers era with frequent partnership shakeups and a lack of one consistently dominant team. The last doubles team to win two majors in the same calendar year were Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah in 2019.
The 2024 Nitto ATP Finals winner could likely come down to just a few points in a wide-open field with razor-thin margins in doubles.

Five Quick Facts about the 2024 ATP Finals
- Two Returning Teams: Similar to the 2024 WTA Finals Field, only two teams that qualified in 2023 return to Turin for this year’s Nitto ATP Finals: No. 2 Marcel Granollers & Horacio Zeballos and No. 6 Rohan Bopanna & Matt Ebden.
- Five Years in a Row: With many new faces in Turin this year, the veteran team of Granollers and Zeballos have remained the constant. 2024 will mark their sixth consecutive season to qualify for the ATP Finals. Individually, Granollers will make his 9th appearance in the last 13 years.
- Missing in Action: Several familiar doubles faces are missing from the lineup this year. The most notable team absence is Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury, the now former partners and four-time major winners who qualified for Turn five consecutive seasons from 2019-2023 and won this event the last two years in 2022-2023. Ivan Dodig, Austin Krajicek, and Neal Skupski are also prominent doubles players missing from this year’s Turin roster.
- Italian Resurgence: Italian veteran Simone Bolleli will make his first ATP Finals appearance in nearly a decade alongside fellow Italian, Andrea Vavassori. He last qualified in 2015 with Fabio Fognini.
- Welcome Aboard Newcomers: Speaking of Vavassori, he is one of five ATP finals newcomers this year alongside Henry Patten, Tim Puetz, Max Purcell, and Jordan Thompson. Not coincidentally, four of these five players are the youngest in the ATP Finals Field with Thompson (30) headlining the 30-and-under crew along with Vavassori (29), Patten (28), and Purcell (26).

He was a 2022 ATP Finals runner-up alongside former partner, Nikola Mektic, who is also in the field this year with Wesley Koolhof.
Arevalo, nicknamed “Chelo”, is the tennis pride of El Salvador and a two-time Roland Garros champion who is making his 2nd ATP Finals appearance in the last three seasons. No. 2 Marcel Granollers & Horacio Zeballos
As the top-ranked, most consistent, and most experienced team in the field, Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos posted another standout season together in 2024. The only missing gap on their doubles partnership resume? A doubles grand slam title.
The Spanish-Argentine pair enters their 6th consecutive ATP Finals together, a remarkable streak spanning from 2019-2024. Granollers was a 2012 ATP Finals champion himself with former partner Marc Lopez. As a team, they finished runner-up in Turin last year but still have yet to claim the elusive ATP Finals title together in the last five appearances. Could the 6th time be the charm?
- Partnership History: They have played together for the last 6 years dating back to 2019
- 2024 Team Record: 45-16 (74%)
- 2024 Titles/Finals: 2 ATP Masters 1000 titles (Canadian Open & Italian Open in Rome); 3 finals (ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells, Buenos Aires, Auckland)

No. 3 Wesley Koolhof & Nikola Mektic
Reunited and it feels so good. In advance of his last season on tour this year, Wesley Koolhof called it quits with his 2023 partner, Neal Skupski, to reunite with good friend and former partner, Nikola Mektic at the beginning of the 2024 season. Based on their results this year, it looks like Koolhof made a good decision.
The Dutch-Croatian pair of 35-year-olds racked up the most ATP trophies of any team competing in Turin, with five ATP titles and two finalist performances. We may have recency bias, but they look like the team to beat right now after winning two of their last three tournaments and posting a 14-2 record during the post-US Open fall swing.
It’s not their first doubles rodeo either. Koolhof and Mektic were 2020 ATP Finals champions during their last partnership stint together and will lean on that experience during Koolhof’s last doubles hoorah.
- Partnership History: Reunited at the beginning of 2024 after playing together in 2020
- 2024 Team Record: 43-16 (73%)
- 2024 Titles/Finals: 5 titles (Three ATP Masters 1000s in Paris, Shanghai, and Indian Wells; Auckland, Rotterdam); 2 finals (Basel, ‘s-Hertogenbosch)
- Strategy Snapshot: In a men’s doubles game of dominant serves, Koolhof and Mektic both have outstanding return games capable of breaking any team’s serve. Combined with their exceptional net play, this is a differentiator compared to other teams in the field.

No. 4 Simone Bolelli & Andrea Vavassori
The “Italian Stallions” were a core part of Italian success on ATP and WTA Tours this year with the likes of Jannik Sinner, Lorenzo Musetti, Jasmine Paolini, and Sara Errani. Bolelli and Vavassori started the year off sizzling with back-to-back major finals runs at the 2024 Australian Open and Roland Garros.
Outside of the majors, the Italians maintained their consistent form throughout the year by winning three ATP titles on three different surfaces: outdoor hard, outdoor clay, and grass. In his debut ATP Finals appearance, 29-year-old Vavassori will look to the experience of 39-year-old Bolelli, who last qualified for the ATP Finals nine years ago in 2015 with former partner Fabio Fognini.
- Partnership History: Teamed up midway through 2023 and played on/off through the end of the season.

- No. 7 Krawietz & Puetz: 2-1
No. 5 Max Purcell & Jordan Thompson
Aussies Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson enjoyed a breakout doubles season together in 2024. Although doubles remains second priority for them behind singles, they committed to playing a full doubles schedule this year and the results showed.
The Aussies, who posted the highest season win percentage (85%) of any team in the ATP Finals field, started off their season in strong form by winning a trio of ATP 250 titles on North American soil. They hit their stride midway through the summer with a run to the Wimbledon finals, where they suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Heliovaara and Patten.
Two months later, they turned their doubles tides by winning the U.S. Open doubles title. The occasion marked their first doubles major together as a pair, and Purcell’s second individual doubles major. Both players will enter their first ATP Finals appearance this year in Turin.

- No. 6 Bopanna & Ebden: 0-0
- No. 7 Heliovaara & Paten: 1-1
- No. 8 Krawietz & Puetz: 1-0
No. 6 Rohan Bopanna & Matt Ebden
If there was an ATP “doubles team of the quarter” winner, Rohan Bopanna and Matt Ebden would have been your pick for Q1 2024. In January, 44-year-old Bopanna made history by becoming the oldest ATP player to win a grand slam doubles title, capturing the Australian Open with Ebden to win their first major as a pair.
Following their success in Melbourne, they continued their momentum to win the Miami Open title together, kicking off their 2024 sophomore campaign with a 14-3 record in the first quarter of the season. Since then, a semi-finals run at Roland Garros was the next highlight amid mediocre results during the summer and fall swings.

No. 7 Harri Heliovaara & Henry Patten
The new kids on the block, Harrio Heliovaara and Henry Patten made doubles noise this summer when they completed a Cinderella-like run to the Wimbledon championships. As fans learned, both players had unique personal and career backstories which made their Wimbledon doubles journey even more remarkable and compelling.
Their doubles success didn’t start or end with Wimbledon, however. Soon after teaming up this spring, Heliovaara and Patten went on a clay court tear with a 19-3 record and multiple titles both on the ATP Challenger and 250 Level. Following their Wimbledon title, they backed up their impressive form with an ATP 250 title in Stockholm and a runner-up showing at the ATP 500 China Open in Beijing.

In their second season together, the consistent German pair of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz quietly posted another successful year. The highlight of their 2024 season came on home soil where they won the ATP 500 title in Hamburg, Germany this past summer. Their late summer surge continued at the U.S. Open, where they won five straight matches before finishing runner-up to Purcell and Thompson in the finals.
Krawietz, 32, is a two-time Roland Garros champion and will make his third ATP Finals appearance after qualifying back-to-back seasons in 2019-2020. Puetz is one of five players making their ATP Finals debut showing this year.
