The 10 Best Active WTA Doubles Players on Clay

As surfaces across pro tennis continue to homogenize, it’s worth appreciating the unique quirks that each one still offers—especially when their season arrives. Each spring comes the long European clay swing, where patience is a virtue on the slow, gritty red surface that often rewards players with variety, heavy topspin, or a consistent, defense-first game.

While true surface specialists are rarer than in previous eras, some players still save their best tennis for the red clay. And the pro doubles tour is no exception. As we gear up for the second week of Rome, Strasbourg, and eventually Roland Garros, the climax of the clay season, here’s our list of the 10 best active WTA doubles players on clay (loosely ordered from the most accomplished clay careers vs. best claycourt players today).

1. Kristina Mladenovic

Though past her prime, the feisty Frenchwoman and current top 25 standout is arguably the most accomplished active WTA doubles player on the clay. Half of her 28 career doubles titles have come on the red dirt, which includes four majors.

The nine-time Grand Slam champion lifted the French Open trophy four times from 2016 to 2022, winning with Caroline Garcia in 2016 and 2022 and with Tímea Babos in 2019 and 2020. Impressively, she’s 4-0 in Roland Garros finals.

Her clay pedigree also includes two prestigious WTA 1000 titles: the 2015 Italian Open (with Babos) and the 2016 Madrid Open (with Garcia).

2. Katerina Siniakova

You’d be hard pressed to find any top doubles list without Katerina Siniakova leading the way. The Czech doubles powerhouse and world No. 1 holds modern era doubles GOAT status with 30 doubles titles, 10 majors and two Olympic gold medals to her resume.

Among her title haul features six clay titles, including a trio of Roland Garros trophies with former partner Barbora Krejcikova (2018, 2021) and Coco Gauff in 2024. She also captured mixed doubles gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics on clay with countryman and former partner Tomáš Macháč.

Teaming with American Taylor Townsend in 2025, the top WTA doubles team has won two of the last three majors and doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.

3. Sara Errani

A proven clay specialist in both singles and doubles, 38-year-old Italian Sara Errani enjoyed a resurgence in 2024, climbing back into the top 5 and winning a few memorable titles along the way. Standing at just 5-foot-5, she thrives on clay by deploying a mix of lobs, drop shots, and angles that can frustrate taller, harder-hitting opponents who thrive on the faster surfaces.

The duo also finished runner-up at Roland Garros just weeks prior. Earlier in her career, Errani won the 2012 French Open with Roberta Vinci and was a finalist in 2013 and 2014. She owns 33 career WTA doubles titles, 14 of which have come on clay.

At 40, American Bethanie Mattek-Sands remains a fan favorite and seasoned doubles veteran. While her peak clay results came over a decade ago, her achievements still hold weight. She’s a three-time Roland Garros champion and has won 11 of her 30 career doubles titles on clay.

Ten years later, Mattek-Sands and Safarova have reunited the doubles dream team together with an impressive quarterfinal showing in Charleston to kick off clay season.

Hsieh has also triumphed three times in Rome (2013, 2019 with Shuai; 2020 with Barbora Strýcová) and added a Madrid title in 2019 with Strýcová. 6. Barbora Krejcikova

Despite battling injuries and scaling back her doubles schedule in recent years, Barbora Krejčíková remains one of the most decorated active players on tour. She holds 12 major titles across singles (2), doubles (7), and mixed (3).

Her clay accolades include a Roland Garros singles title (2021) and two women’s doubles crowns with Siniakova (2018, 2021). Outside the Slams, she won the 2021 Madrid Open with Siniakova and reached the final in 2023 with Laura Siegemund. Four of her 19 doubles titles have come on clay.

7. Timea Babos

The 32-year-old Hungarian was once a promising junior singles talent but has built a more decorated career in doubles. A four-time major champion, Timea Babos partnered with Mladenovic to win Roland Garros in 2019 and 2020.

8. Jasmine Paolini

Recency bias? Maybe. But it’s hard to ignore Jasmine Paolini‘s 2024 clay season. The 29-year-old late bloomer from Italy teamed with Errani for a blistering spring, winning the Italian Open, finishing runner-up at Roland Garros, and capturing Olympic gold in Paris. They’ve also come into the 2025 clay season in fine form with a repeat victory in Rome.

Errani and Paoli have posted an impressive 21-5 record in clay events over the last two seasons. With big points to defend in Paris, look for the Italians to build on their momentum in Rome and be a top contender for the Roland Garros title once again. It would mark Paolini’s elusive first grand slam title.

9. Coco Gauff

Unlike many of her American counterparts, 21-year-old Coco Gauff thrives on the red clay. Though she has scaled back her doubles schedule significantly since her two-year doubles partnership with Jessica Pegula, her doubles accomplishments on clay during a short period speak for themselves.

10. Demi Schuurs

A steady top 20 performer over the last decade, Dutch veteran Demi Schuurs has quietly built one of the most reliable clay résumés on tour. Seven of her 20 career doubles titles have come on clay.
